Hair loss in men - treatment
Hair loss or male pattern baldness is a common and natural aging process in men. This condition affects around half of men over 50 and 3 in 10 men in their thirties. This condition is caused by the hormone testosterone, being converted into dihydrotestosterone.
As this is a natural and harmless aging process treatments are considered to be cosmetic and therefore are not available on the NHS.
Here at Jaysons we provide the two most common treatments for male pattern baldness, available for purchase both in store on and online.
'Propecia' – Finasteride
Medication in a tablet form, that needs to be taken every day. This works by stopping the hair follicles converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. This treatment takes about 3 months for hair loss to be stopped and 1-2 years before any regrowth is seen. A private prescription is needed for this treatment, which can be obtained from your doctor or Jaysons pharmacy free of charge. Upon stopping this treatment, hair will start to fall out again, and finasteride does not work in female balding.
'Regaine' – Minoxidil
This is a 'rub on' treatment that comes in two strengths, 2% and 5% with the higher strength being most effective. This treatment is needed to be used every day for it to take effect. Half of men that use ‘Regaine’ notice a stop in hair loss in 4 months. It is important to note that new hair or prevented hair loss will cease after two months of not using ‘Regaine’ meaning hair loss will again occur.
