Methadone and Buprenorphine Supervision
For those people who have taken the first step to getting help and trying to wean themselves off Heorin, by getting prescriptions for Methadone or Buprenorphine, from Addaction or similar charities, Jaysons Pharmacy dispense and supervise these prescriptions to make sure that the correct doses are taken and the system is not being abused.
What is Methadone?
Methadone is a synthetic Opiate used as a painkiller, and also a substitute for heroin, in the treatment of heroin addiction, that comes in liquid form. This drug works by depressing the nervous system and slowing down body functioning and reducing psychological and physical pain. This drug gives similar effects to heroin but with out the high. It is used to slowly wean people of heroin as the dose given can be reduced from time to time helping to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Methadone patients need to be careful. If you have missed 3 doses, do not take without permission from the doctor, taking too much can cause a coma or death from respiratory failure.
What is Buprenorphine?
Buprenorphine or Subutex (brand name) is again a synthetically made opiate, used as a painkiller and as a way of weaning people off heroin (doses greater than 2mg). It comes as a sublingual tablet and is to be placed under the tongue until fully dissolved. It should not be swallowed or chewed whole. Opioids attach themselves to receptors in the brain and cause three effects on the body, reduced respiration, euphoria and decreased pain. Buprenorphine, being only partial agonist, clings to these receptors but are ill fitting. This means that they latch on to the receptors but not provide the same high but instead trick the brain into thinking that it has received the full amount of opiates it craves. Doses of buprenorphine are capped at 32mg as this is the ceiling dose for this drug, if you take 40mg it will not give you any more effect than if you took 32mg.
It is advised that for the first three months doses of Methadone or Buprenorphine are to be supervised by your doctor, nurse or community pharmacist, which is what we do at Jaysons Pharmacy. Bring in your prescription and we can sort out the supervision process for you.
Needle and Syringe Exchange
This is a vital and life saving service to those who are not ready to give up drugs which are injected into the body. By providing these people with clean, sterile needles we are reducing the risk of Hepatitis C, HIV and other diseases spread by blood to blood contact. As people are using clean needles they are being less of a burden on the NHS as they will not require expensive treatments for diseases caught while injecting.
