Can a pharmacist treat a urinary tract infection?
Yes. Under the NHS Pharmacy First Service, our pharmacists can assess eligible women aged 16–64 years with symptoms of an uncomplicated urinary tract infection, provide advice, supply NHS treatment where appropriate, or refer you if further assessment is needed.
What are the symptoms of a UTI?
Common symptoms include pain or burning when passing urine, needing to pass urine more often, urgency, lower abdominal discomfort, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and sometimes blood in the urine.
Do I need antibiotics?
Not always. Your pharmacist will assess your symptoms using NHS clinical guidance. If antibiotics are appropriate, they can be supplied under the NHS Pharmacy First Service.
How can I help relieve my symptoms?
Drink enough fluids to stay hydrated, avoid delaying passing urine, and consider taking simple pain relief if appropriate. Your pharmacist will advise you on the best treatment for your symptoms.
When should I seek urgent medical advice?
Seek urgent medical attention if you:
• Have a high fever, chills or shivering.
• Develop pain in your back or side below the ribs (loin pain).
• Feel confused, drowsy or very unwell.
• Are pregnant.
• Have recurrent UTIs or symptoms that do not improve.
• Are outside the eligible age range or are male, as further assessment may be required.

Are you experiencing pain or burning when passing urine, needing to pass urine more frequently, or an urgent need to go? Our NHS Pharmacy First Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Service provides assessment and treatment for eligible women aged 16–64 years, without needing a GP appointment.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common, particularly in women, and are usually caused by bacteria entering the bladder. Early assessment and treatment can help relieve symptoms and reduce the risk of the infection worsening.
Common symptoms of a urinary tract infection include:
• Pain or burning when passing urine (dysuria)
• Needing to pass urine more often than usual (frequency)
• A sudden or urgent need to pass urine (urgency)
• Passing only small amounts of urine
• Pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen (suprapubic pain)
• Urine that appears cloudy
• Strong-smelling urine
• Blood in the urine (may occur in some uncomplicated UTIs)
• Feeling generally unwell
Most uncomplicated UTIs improve quickly with appropriate treatment. It is important to seek assessment promptly if symptoms are getting worse or do not improve.
Who can use this service?
• Women aged 16–64 years
• Symptoms of an uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection
• Face-to-face consultation only
