Are you suffering from facial pain, a blocked nose, or symptoms of a sinus infection? Our NHS Pharmacy First Sinusitis Service provides assessment and treatment for eligible patients aged 12 years and over, without needing a GP appointment.
Common symptoms of sinusitis include:
Facial pain or pressure, particularly around the cheeks, eyes or forehead
Blocked or congested nose
Thick yellow or green nasal discharge
Reduced or loss of sense of smell
Headache
Toothache or pain in the upper jaw
Fever (high temperature)
Bad breath
Persistent cough, particularly at night
Feeling generally unwell or tired
Sinusitis commonly develops after a cold or upper respiratory tract infection and is caused by inflammation of the sinuses.
Most cases improve within 2 to 3 weeks, although symptoms may last longer in some people.

Can a pharmacist treat a sinus infection?
Yes. Under the NHS Pharmacy First Service, our pharmacists can assess eligible patients aged 12 years and over with symptoms of sinusitis, provide advice, supply NHS treatment where appropriate, or refer you to your GP or hospital if further assessment is needed.
Do I need a GP appointment?
No. Eligible patients can usually be assessed directly through the NHS Pharmacy First Service without needing to see a GP first.
What are the symptoms of sinusitis?
Common symptoms include facial pain or pressure, a blocked nose, thick yellow or green nasal discharge, headache, reduced sense of smell, toothache and fever.
How long does sinusitis last?
Most cases improve within 2 to 3 weeks. However, if your symptoms are severe, persist, or worsen, further assessment may be required.
When should I seek urgent medical advice?
Seek urgent medical attention if you develop swelling around the eyes, severe headache, confusion, double vision, a high fever that is not improving, or if you become seriously unwell.
