Pharmacy First Impetigo Assessment – Adults and Children (1 year and over)
Has your child or a family member developed a contagious skin infection with blisters or honey-coloured crusts? Our NHS Pharmacy First Impetigo Service provides assessment and treatment for eligible patients aged 1 year and over, without needing a GP appointment.
Impetigo is a common and highly contagious bacterial skin infection that most often affects young children, although it can occur at any age. Early assessment and treatment can help speed up recovery and reduce the spread of infection.
Common symptoms of impetigo include:
Red sores or patches on the skin
Honey-coloured or golden crusts
Small fluid-filled blisters
Itchy or irritated skin
Sores around the nose and mouth
Sores on the hands, arms or legs
Skin that may be painful or tender
New patches spreading to nearby skin
Impetigo usually begins when bacteria enter through a cut, scratch, insect bite, eczema or other damaged skin.
Without treatment, impetigo usually clears within 2 to 3 weeks, but appropriate treatment often helps it resolve more quickly and reduces the risk of spreading the infection.

Can a pharmacist treat impetigo?
Yes. Under the NHS Pharmacy First Service, our pharmacists can assess eligible patients aged 1 year and over with symptoms of impetigo, provide advice, supply NHS treatment where appropriate, or refer you if further assessment is needed.
What does impetigo look like?
Impetigo usually starts as red sores or blisters that burst and form distinctive honey-coloured or golden crusts. It most commonly affects the face, especially around the nose and mouth, but can occur anywhere on the body.
Is impetigo contagious?
Yes. Impetigo spreads easily through close contact or by sharing towels, clothing or bedding. Good hand hygiene and avoiding close contact until treatment has started can help prevent spreading the infection.
How long does impetigo last?
Without treatment, impetigo usually clears within 2 to 3 weeks. Appropriate treatment often speeds recovery and reduces the chance of passing it to others.
When should I seek urgent medical advice?
Seek medical advice promptly if the infection is spreading rapidly, affects the eyes, causes significant pain or swelling, is associated with fever or your child appears generally unwell. Patients with widespread infection or underlying medical conditions may require further assessment.
