Pharmacy First Ear Infection (Otitis Media) Assessment – Children & Young People (1–17 years)
Is your child suffering from ear pain, earache, or a suspected ear infection? Our NHS Pharmacy First Ear Infection Service provides assessment and treatment for eligible children and young people aged 1–17 years, without needing a GP appointment.
Common symptoms of an ear infection (otitis media) include:
Ear pain or pain inside the ear
Earache
Reduced hearing or temporary hearing loss
Ear discharge (fluid or pus from the ear)
A feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear
High temperature (fever)
Feeling sick or vomiting
Tiredness or lack of energy
Itching or irritation in or around the ear
Scaly skin around the ear
Many ear infections occur following a cold, sore throat, cough or runny nose (upper respiratory tract infection).
In babies and young children, symptoms may also include:
Pulling or rubbing the ear
Being irritable, unsettled or crying more than usual
Difficulty hearing or not responding to sounds
Poor feeding or loss of appetite
Problems with balance
Most ear infections improve within 3 days, although some symptoms can last for up to one week.
