Acute Otitis Media (Ear Infection) (Face to Face only) (1-17yr old)

NHS Pharmacy First assessment and treatment for ear infections (otitis media) in children aged 1–17 years. Ear pain, earache, hearing loss and discharge.

Can a pharmacist treat an ear infection?

Yes. Under the NHS Pharmacy First Service, our pharmacists can assess eligible children aged 1–17 years with symptoms of an ear infection, provide advice, supply NHS treatment where appropriate, or refer to a GP or hospital if required.

Do I need a GP appointment?

No. Eligible children can usually be assessed directly through the NHS Pharmacy First Service without needing to see a GP first.

When should I seek urgent medical advice?

Seek urgent medical attention if your child is very drowsy, develops a rash that does not fade when pressed, has severe swelling around the ear, or you are worried they are seriously unwell.

Pharmacy First Ear Infection (Otitis Media) Assessment – Children & Young People (1–17 years)

Is your child suffering from ear pain, earache, or a suspected ear infection? Our NHS Pharmacy First Ear Infection Service provides assessment and treatment for eligible children and young people aged 1–17 years, without needing a GP appointment.

Common symptoms of an ear infection (otitis media) include:

• Ear pain or pain inside the ear

• Earache

• Reduced hearing or temporary hearing loss

• Ear discharge (fluid or pus from the ear)

• A feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear

• High temperature (fever)

• Feeling sick or vomiting

• Tiredness or lack of energy

• Itching or irritation in or around the ear

• Scaly skin around the ear

Many ear infections occur following a cold, sore throat, cough or runny nose (upper respiratory tract infection).

In babies and young children, symptoms may also include:

• Pulling or rubbing the ear

• Being irritable, unsettled or crying more than usual

• Difficulty hearing or not responding to sounds

• Poor feeding or loss of appetite

• Problems with balance

Most ear infections improve within 3 days, although some symptoms can last for up to one week.

Who can use this service?

• Children and young people aged 1–17 years

• Face-to-face consultation only

• Available through the NHS Pharmacy First Service Our experienced pharmacists can assess your symptoms, advise on the best treatment, provide NHS medicines where appropriate, or refer you to a GP or hospital if further assessment is needed.
