Can a pharmacist treat an infected insect bite?

Yes. Under the NHS Pharmacy First Service, our pharmacists can assess eligible patients aged 1 year and over with symptoms of an infected insect bite, provide advice, supply NHS treatment where appropriate, or refer you if further assessment is required.

How do I know if an insect bite is infected?

An infected insect bite is often red, swollen, warm, painful or tender, and the redness may continue to spread. Some people may develop pus, discharge or a fever.

Can I treat an insect bite myself?

Most insect bites improve with self-care, including keeping the area clean, avoiding scratching and using pain relief or antihistamines if appropriate. If symptoms worsen or you think the bite has become infected, seek assessment through the NHS Pharmacy First Service.

When should I seek urgent medical advice?

Seek urgent medical attention if you develop rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, severe pain, a high fever, red streaks spreading from the bite, or you become seriously unwell.

How can I help prevent insect bites becoming infected?

Avoid scratching the bite, keep the area clean, wash your hands before touching it, and monitor for increasing redness, swelling or pain. Scratching can damage the skin and increase the risk of infection.
